Dr. Gilbert, a Pitt County native, graduated from Greenville Christian Academy before earning his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and his MD from ECU's Brody School of Medicine in 2010. He completed his Family Medicine residency at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, as Chief Resident.
